online Bachelors Degrees in Communications Arts

Bachelors Degree – Communications
A Bachelors Degree in Communications prepares you for careers in mass media, journalism, publication design, public relations, and advertising.  Because the skills acquired by obtaining this degree include written, verbal, visual, and electronic communication, a communications major will be ready for positions like meeting planner, advertising executive, product spokesperson, television producer, or magazine editor.  As well, you can focus on journalism and become a news reporter, columnist, or talk show host.

Communications is the message that is sent out by individuals and organizations by way of the media.  The media is an essential channel of communication that an entity will use to get its point across through images, writing, speech, and even music.  The media includes television, the internet, radio, film, magazines, art, newspapers, books, flyers, public speeches, meetings, teleconferences, memos, billboards, and any other medium that sends a message.  As you can see, the field of communications encompasses any way that a message can be conveyed from one person to another and includes the use of any communication medium to accomplish this task.  This is why the field of communications affords anyone who is a strong communicator the opportunity for a very diverse workload.  A strong communicator is also in demand by companies and organizations that need to get their message to employees, shareholders, consumers, governments, and anyone who needs to hear it.

A degree in communications will be diversified in the fact that you will work with all communications mediums.  This means that you will be learning all aspects of communication, but with a particular emphasis on television, radio, writing, graphics, and the internet.  The internet has been the fastest growing media in the past decade, so a communications expert will be expected to have a strong grasp on web development and internet marketing.  You will also learn journalism, television production, radio production, computer graphics, public relations, and advertising.  All of these disciplines rely heavily on computers, so a working knowledge of software and hardware will be necessary.  You can also focus on one discipline, such as public relations, or television production.

In a communications degree program, you will have two years of general education which should focus on writing, speech, art, the humanities, and some computer science.  Classes in your major of communications will include communications research, research methods, corporate communication, cultural theory, communications law and ethics, techniques of speaking, fundamentals of journalism, public relations, professional presentations, critical reasoning, marketing management, communications theory, electronic publication, desktop publication, mass media and society, persuasive writing, advertising design, and production design.

These are general classes offered, however you can specialize.  For example, if you wanted to go into advertising, you could take the general advertising design class, but then also take classes in computer graphics, typography, persuasive writing, television production, electronic publishing, and photography to complete your specialization.

Career Opportunities in Communications
Career opportunities in the field of communications are extremely diverse.  Generally, communications majors will have to start out as interns or production assistants, but can go on to very high level positions in advertising, news, publishing, television, film, radio, public relations, or event planning.  The great thing about communications is that you can choose to be in front of the camera, like a news reporter, or you can choose to be on the other side and produce the news.  Many communications majors start out as on-camera talent themselves and then move into producing as they gain more experience.
