Public Security & Safety Bachelors Degrees

Bachelor's Degrees in Public Safety & Security

A Bachelors Degree in Public Security can prepare you for management positions in public safety, private security, homeland security, disaster response and recovery, or hazard identification and mitigation.  This is an excellent degree for someone who wants to make the transition from the military into a civilian public safety career.  This degree may also help with your career advancement in federal, state, or local security and enforcement agencies.

Public security or public safety includes many facets of protecting private and public resources.  With 85% of the nation’s infrastructure being privately owned, private security is being recognized as an integral part of guarding the nations business assets against many national and international security risks.  Public security and safety are also part of homeland security, which protects the citizens, lands, and other properties of your country.  This entails working with government agencies who also oversee disaster response and recovery.

Public security is a natural change from a military career into a higher civilian public safety or security position.
Earning a degree in public security will provide you with the opportunity to learn the technology, strategies, and principles that keep people, assets, and property safe.  There are three specializations of public security, which include security management, homeland security, and emergency management.    Security management focuses on the protection of information, as well as commercial and retail properties.

Homeland security focuses on upholding national security through the defeat of domestic and international terrorism with diplomacy, technology, intelligence, and multijurisdictional coordination. Emergency management focuses on public safety research, theory, and principles, and how they apply to real life disasters.

In a public security degree program, the classes you take will depend on your specialization, but there are some overlapping areas of study between Security Management, Homeland Security, and Emergency Management.  Before you start classes for the degree, you will need a general associate’s degree with classes in statistics, communication, humanities, natural science, mathematics, and social science.

Once in the program, the core classes for all three specializations will include Communication Strategies for the Public Safety Professional, Introduction to Criminal Justice, Introduction to Emergency Management, Principles of Security Management, Introduction to Homeland Security, Applied Public Safety Theory, Principles of Public Safety Investigation, Applied Public Safety Research Methods, History of Violence in the U.S. Society, Introductory to Public Safety Statistical Research, and Justice, Crime, and Ethics.

Advanced classes will correspond to your chosen discipline which covers the advanced principles of security management, homeland security, and emergency management.  You will also be required to complete a capstone project which will be reflective of your chosen specialty.

Careers in Public Security and Safety
Careers in public security and safety are generally advancements to management for those who already work in entry level positions in federal, state, or local security and enforcement agencies.  They are also for those with military training who have left the service and would like to use the skills they already have in the public sector.  These days, public security is not just about being a night time security guard in an empty building, or getting hired as a mall cop.  Security personnel are used on every level to help prevent terrorism, stop corporate security breaches, investigate information theft, and provide assistance in national disasters.  There are many employment opportunities with private companies as well as local, regional, and national government entities.
