Bachelor Degrees in Health Science, Wellness, Nutrition
A Bachelors Degree in Health Science can advance your current career in health care with the academic study of leadership in the health care industry. Certified health care professionals or those with an associate’s degree are encouraged to advance their career in the health care industry with the added understanding of the overall health care picture that a Bachelors Degree in Health Science provides. With a health science degree, health professionals are qualified to pursue managerial careers in the health care and health promotion industries.
Health science is the academic study of leadership in the health care industry by the use of current, practical health care models. A health science degree is aimed at health care professionals who are certified - like dental assistants, EMT’s, medical assistants, nurses, and physical therapy assistants - and who would like to advance in their current career to a management role in a hospital or a clinic. A Bachelors Degree in Health Science is often used to obtain a masters degree in a chosen field in order to become a medical professional like an occupational therapist.
Earning a degree in health science will provide you with the opportunity to learn the operational challenges of the health care industry. Through a curriculum of leadership and practical medical knowledge taught by health care educators, you will learn to understand the changing environment of health care and how to take a management role in it. This will include learning how to communicate effectively, how successful health care systems work, how to research solutions for health care practice and policy concerns, how to apply health care models and theories to real situations, and how to lead effectively in a health care environment. You will also study the major impact that politics, ethics, and legal issues can have on health care delivery systems.
Because the purpose of a health science degree is to further an existing career or prepare you for graduate study in a particular medical discipline, your course of study will vary depending on what line of work you intend to pursue. Your existing associate’s degree or certification will be the basis of the courses you take in order to earn your degree. An associate’s degree that will allow you to earn your bachelors degree will include classes in general biology, biochemistry, microbiology, neuroscience, chemistry, physics for health sciences, anatomy, psychology, sociology, and statistics/research methods.
This is in addition to general education classes like English, math, speech, and computer science. If you have a certification in a field like nursing or medical assisting, you will have to talk to an advisor in order to figure out what classes you will need to take in order to complete the equivalent of an associate’s degree. Upper division classes will include history of the health system, health care ethics, epidemiology, research and design for health care, health care practice, principles of leadership, health service management, conflict resolution in heath care, health policy, concepts of health care finance, and health care delivery systems. You will also be required to complete an internship in the field of work you wish to pursue.
Career Opportunities in Health Science
Management career opportunities in health science are available in hospitals, clinics, government agencies, pharmaceutical companies, and insurance companies. Clinical and non-clinical careers are available. As well, if you use your bachelor’s degree to pursue a master’s degree, you will be able to work professionally in the medical career of your choice.
